A new stem cells centre at Jordan University has just been officially opened by His Majesty King Abdullah. The Cell Therapy Centre (CTC) will be the first stem cell research and treatment facility of its kind in Jordan.
This new stem cells centre at Jordan University will focus on developing stem cell therapies, performing research and providing training. The facility includes a number of laboratories, stem cell production units and stem cell implantation units.
King Abdullah toured the CTC and was briefed by the general director, Abdullah Al Abbadi. The CTC has been designed to meet the same standards as stem cell research facilities in the United States and Europe. It was funded in part by a grant from the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD).
His Majesty King Abdullah was told how stem cells are cultured, processed and implanted. King Abdullah was very impressed by the facility and the work which is set to take place there.
It is the first stem cells centre at Jordan University and will operate with the help of talented graduates from the university. The university is at the forefront of stem cell research and has published 14 papers on stem cells.
The facility has already made some breakthroughs including culturing skin cells from stem cells. The skin cells can be used to treat burns and cosmetic defects. They have also made bones and components of the eye. The CTC is also involved in researching the ability of stem cells to repair damaged cartilage.
The 3,200 square-metre facility didn’t come cheap, costing JD10 million to build. However, it is a major step forward for the country. Jordan has some very talented scientists working in the field. They will now have a facility where they can research stem cells and develop new treatments.
