Pregnancy affects everyone differently. So when it comes to how you’re affected by the hot summer nights, a lucky few will be able to sleep throughout the night without disruption. Others, however, won’t be so lucky. Our top tips for pregnant women will help you to sleep better and cope during the heat.

Keep your room cool

If you’re feeling hot during the night, having a warm room won’t help. In fact, it will just make you restless and irritable. Lower the temperature of the room however you can; open a window or turn the air conditioning on. It may be that your room needs to be cool for you to feel comfortable and restful.

Pick your clothes carefully

If you prefer wearing clothes to bed then make sure they’re loose fitting, and made of a light natural fibre like cotton or linen. A nightgown is a good choice and will help you to feel cooler.

Invest in fans

One of our top tips for pregnant women is to invest in some fans for the bedroom. When it comes to keeping the bedroom cool, a fan is a great choice and well worth the money. They’re also cheap to buy and cheap to run, so a cost saving alternative to an air conditioning unit. You can also position the fan perfectly so you feel a constant breeze to help you feel more rested.

Keep layers to hand

Although sleeping in the nude is great when you’re feeling hot, there will be a point during the night when your body temperature starts to normalise. This is normally in the early hours of the morning, and so one of our top tips for pregnant women is to keep some sheets or thin blankets nearby. You can grab these extra layers in your sleep to keep you warm and help regulate your temperature.

Stay away from screens

It can be really tempting to get the iPad out when you’ve been tossing and turning for hours. If you are feeling restless and unable to sleep, you may get that itchy feeling of wanting to check Facebook. Try and resist the urge if you can. Turning on a screen will wake you up and banish all thoughts of sleep from your mind. It then becomes really difficult to get sleepy when you’re staring at a screen.

Brave it out

As much as the restless, hot summer nights feel like torture, it is only temporary and it will pass. It’s worth clinging to that thought when you feel like you’re going to go insane with the heat. It won’t be this uncomfortable forever so brave it out safe in the knowledge that it will be over soon.

This list of top tips for pregnant women who have difficulty sleeping in the heat will be sure to help encourage a restful night.
