How to Create a Cozy & Safe Nursery for Your Newborn Baby

New parents are likely to worry about a number of things and getting the nursery right is almost guaranteed to be a top priority. Creating a safe nursery for your newborn is easier than most people think and can be achieved with a few simple tips. Here we’re going to look at some of the things to remember for creating a newborn nursery.

Be mindful of cords

Low-standing furniture like the crib and the playpen need to be kept away from the window where your baby could be in danger of grabbing the cord. Cordless window coverings are advised as a precaution against this but you also don’t want to run the risk of your child climbing up onto the window. It might not be a concern straight away, but your child will be up moving before you know it.

Store toys correctly

Boxes and bins without lids are the perfect solution for storing toys. Alternatively, if you do have toy storage with a lid, then ensure it has a spring-loaded mechanical arm to keep the lid open and prevent it from falling on your baby’s hand or arm. This is an important part of creating a safe nursery for your newborn but if you have storage without a lid, this can easily be rectified with a trip to the hardware store.

Keep an eye on sockets

Power outlets are a major hazard and you should cover each one with a baby friendly covering to keep those little fingers out. Try and purchase ones that will cover the entire socket to prevent your baby from getting their fingers behind them.

Minimalism is best

Reducing the number of hazards surrounding your baby is incredibly important to prevent suffocation. It can be tempting to decorate your newborn’s crib to look all cozy and warm, but it should only contain a firm, tight-fitting mattress and a crib sheet.

Create a nursing nook

When it comes to late-night feedings, it’s important that you have a cozy space for you and your baby. Choosing the right furniture is important to maintaining a safe nursery for your newborn and to minimise risk. A chair that rocks is great for these feeds to help keep you both relaxed but always make sure you check if it’s safe to go in the nursery.

Pick a soft floor

Your baby will spend a majority of their time on the floor. This will essentially become their play area and so furnishing it with a soft rug is a great way to make the room feel more cozy. If the rug has a great texture to it, your baby will love it even more.

Carefully pick your décor

Anything heavy that you hang on your walls could cause serious injury should they fall. Keep all the artwork as lightweight as possible and be sure to be mindful about the choking hazards. Ribbons, cords and even mobiles all pose a risk of strangulation. Learn more about how to childproof your home »
