Stem Cell Therapy Helping Dogs Heal

A new stem cell therapy is recording a 95% success rate in treating damaged joints and ligaments in dogs.  Veterinarians in Dartmouth Massachusetts have been using the technology to treat their client’s animals and have seen very positive results.

The Chase Farm Veterinary Clinic in Dartmouth was one of the first clinics in the country to have access to this stem cell technology, developed by MediVet Biologics of Kentucky, USA.  The technology involves obtaining stem cells from the blood and fat tissue of the animals, then using those stem cells to repair damage to the animal’s joints and ligaments.  It can all be done on-site in the veterinarian’s clinic.

The animal is sedated before the blood and fat samples are taken.  The device then separates plasma from the blood with a centrifuge.  The fat cells are altered using a chemical before also being put into a centrifuge to precipitate stem cells.  The stem cells gathered during the process are then re-injected into the dog’s joints to help the healing process and reduce inflammation.  This new stem cell therapy helping dogs heal is also much cheaper than previous stem cell therapies because it is done by the veterinarian instead of lab technicians.

If the procedure is successful, pain subsides within about seven to ten days.  The healing process for damaged joints and ligaments takes place over the next one to three months.  The clinic has seen very impressive success rates with the procedure, with 95% of animals seeing some improvement in their condition.

This is not the first stem cell therapy helping dogs heal, but it is the one of the first technologies that can done in-house at the veterinarian’s clinic.  The technology increases the availability of the treatment and makes it less expensive.
