Umbilical Cord Tissue Used in Successful Treatment of Pulmonary Disorder

A 3-year-old girl with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) has been given a new lease on life! It’s all thanks to an “experimental” treatment tried by her doctors — giving her stem cells from her baby sister’s umbilical cord tissue.

The young girl was in critical condition. She’s unable to breathe even when lying still and expending no energy. She was on the verge of heart failure and doctors had recommended a lung transplant. Something only suggested when the child has less than a year to live.

Yet, rather than put the small child through such a massive surgery, doctors decided to try something new. When her younger sister was born, they harvested the umbilical cord tissue stem cells. These cells were bathed in nutrient liquid and fortified before infusing them into the older sister’s heart and lungs over a period of 6 months.

Then a miracle happened.

The girl went from breathless to breathing, from still to moving, and grew 10 centimeters in the first 3 months after treatment!

Doctors are happy with her levels and she’s living a normal, healthier life than she was before. She will most likely still need treatment as the years go by. But the family has new hope that she’ll be able to live a normal life. And if she does need more intense treatment, the possibility of stem cell treatment remains even as she grows older.

Our brave 3-year-old is now 6 years and shows no sign of slowing down again. For all intents and purposes, she’s a smiley, happy child who behaves like any other child does.

All thanks to the miracle of umbilical cord stem cells. This is only one of hundreds of stories showing the huge promise of stem cells as a treatment for any number of conditions.

Umbilical Cord Tissue Banking

At Cells4Life, we provide you the option to store their baby’s umbilical cord tissue together with the cord blood. This allows you to store the most number of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from both the cord tissue and cord blood. You will also be able to capture other valuable stem cells that are not present in the cord blood.

The process of collecting the cord tissue is safe and non-invasive. It happens when the umbilical cord is cut and clamped, and once the cord blood sample has been collected by your doctor or midwife. The Cells4Life collection kit has a special container for the cord tissue and once it arrives at our lab, it is processed immediately.

Cells4Life is the only cord blood bank in the UK and Middle East to store the umbilical cord tissue in multiple subdivisions. This enables the parents to use a part of the sample as required for transplant, and keep the remaining in storage until needed.
