California is home to many important research laboratories which are testing new stem cell treatments.  In recent years, they have focused on regenerative medicine, where stem cells are used to repair or replace parts of the human body.

One of the most important research organisations for funding stem cell research in California is the Stem Cell Agency.  They provide funding to promising studies and help organise clinical trials of viable stem cell treatments.

California also benefits from having a dedicated network of medical centres that are used to perform stem cell trials.  This network is called the CIRM Alpha Stem Cell Clinics Network.  Having these organisations to work with makes it easy for researchers to create and test a new stem cell treatment.

The Alpha Stem Cell Clinics Network consists of clinics in UC San Diego, City of Hope in Duarte, UC Los Angeles and UC Irvine.  They have already conducted 34 stem trials, which looked at the viability of stem cell treatments for everything from cancer through to heart disease.  Hundreds of patients have received a stem cell treatment at one of these clinics.

Many professionals have participated in stem trials being held at the clinics, including researchers, pharmacists, doctors, and nurses.  The clinics are also a useful resource for patients who are looking for information about a specific stem cell treatment or stem cell trial.

Given the incredible success of the CIRM Alpha Stem Cell Clinics Network, the CIRM board voted to expand the network in 2017.  They have approved funding of $16 million for two additional medical centres to be built this year.  These additional centres will improve the access that patients have to stem cell treatments and will make it easier for researchers to continue their work.
