Aug12-4 Effective Ways to Bond with Your Baby

Developing a loving and caring relationship with your baby not only makes you and your baby happier but can help you as a mother to feel more fulfilled. For all new parents, the first few weeks of a newborn’s life are crucial to getting to know your baby and your own parenting style, discovering what does and doesn’t work. Creating that all important bond with your baby is vital during this time and for a healthy future relationship to develop and grow as well.

Spending time together

Spending time with your baby is the most important thing you can do. It will form a strong foundation on which you can build a strong relationship. You can develop this bond further with as much skin-to-skin contact as possible. Cuddling your baby this way will help soothe both of you.

Picking your baby up when they cry, even if you don’t know what they want, is another way of approaching this. By being responsive to your baby’s needs, you will come to be the trustworthy and reliable parent figure your baby needs.

Breastfeed

Breastfeeding is the perfect time to lengthen the amount of time you have skin-to-skin contact. As well as the skin contact, nursing is ideal for learning your baby’s body language. Responding to your baby’s need for nourishment and attention will encourage a trusting relationship.

For those who find they can’t breastfeed – or for the father’s – nursing via the bottle will provide the same opportunity to bond with your baby

____________

Pay attention

When it comes to learning your baby’s body language, make sure you pay close attention to their facial expressions and reactions. By doing so, you’ll gradually become an expert on what your baby does and doesn’t like. This means you can provide songs you know will make them happy or know what to do when they just want to be fussed over.

But learning to bond with your baby is not all one way. Teach your baby what you like and dislike. Sing your favourite song or make up a funny little game.

Talking

A constant stream of words is not only great for your baby’s learning but will also help them to identify you. Newborns are able to recognise voices and even register a smile, so maintain lots of eye contact and hold your face close to theirs with a big smile – their sight will only be about 30cm to begin with – to ensure they know who you are.

And no, your baby isn’t going to understand what you’re saying but that doesn’t matter. Open communication is one of the best ways to bond with your baby. Be silly, play games, tell them about your day and describe what’s around them. Your voice can be soothing to them too and will build a strong relationship you can work on throughout their life.
