Umbilical cord tissue banking is a service we offer at Cells4Life in addition to cord blood banking. This involves collecting a piece of the umbilical cord at the time of birth, after the cord has been cut away and the cord blood is collected. Here’s a short article to help expectant parents learn more about cord tissue banking.

Why Consider Cord Tissue Banking?

A newborn baby’s umbilical cord tissue is a rich source of Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs). Saving the umbilical cord tissue enables you to preserve more stem cells that can potentially cure many illnesses.

Umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells may be useful in the treatment of many condition and diseases including:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
  • Liver disease
  • Stroke
  • Serious wounds
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Cartilage repair

Signing Up to Cord Tissue Banking

During sign up, all you need to do is let your Cells4Life cord blood specialist know that you want to save the umbilical cord tissue as well. We’ll provide you with the proper cord blood collection kit that includes materials for cord tissue collection. The collection will be done by your doctor or midwife after they finished collecting the cord blood. Then it will be shipped together with the cord blood sample to our UK lab to be tested and processed.
