Mar 03 - Ways to Make Your Newborn Sleep

We all hear how the only thing babies do is eat and sleep when they come home, but some parents are finding the opposite to be true. Your baby was warm, cozy, always fed and safe inside your womb. Imagine coming from that environment into this cold, uncertain world. This can be a lot for a newborn to process, so sometimes they may have trouble sleeping, and they don’t feel as secure as they did inside the mother’s womb. Here are some effective ways to make your newborn sleep well:

1. Swaddling your newborn

Your newborn baby was in a closed environment in your uterus and was quite compact. This is why swaddling is such a big help when it comes to making your newborn feel safe.

When you swaddle your baby you should tuck their arms gently inside, this allows your baby to feel the same way they did during the last months of your pregnancy. Lay a receiving blanket down with a corner at the top. Place your baby on the blanket and take the corner to the right and wrap it over your baby with their arm inside, then take the corner at the bottom and pull up and over your baby’s feet, not too tightly though. Then wrap the left corner the rest of the way around your baby with their other arm enclosed.

You should allow some wiggle room for their feet, but still wrap them tightly enough to make them feel swaddled. This feeling will remind them of the womb and they should go right to sleep.

2. Rock your baby gently

Another thing your newborn will love is movement. When inside your belly, they moved around all the time. So rock them, or sway, or gently bounce them. They will go right to sleep and this also helps calming a baby.

3. White noise or soothing voice/music

One thing that some parents don’t think about is white noise. Sound is magnified in water and that is where they have been the past nine months ─ in the water inside your womb. So, everything they heard was loud. It’s a common misconception that a baby needs to have a quiet environment to sleep, but this actually may keep them up. They may feel very alone if they hear absolutely nothing.

White noise like a vacuum or a noise machine will help with this. You can even make the noise yourself. If you get close to their ear and make the “shhhhhhhhhhhhh” noise continuously, this will remind your baby of the sounds they heard while in the uterus. Music can also help the baby feel at ease and relax. Make sure it is soothing music.

The above tips to make your newborn to sleep will help your baby get to that cozy, safe, feeling again and help them drift-off to dreamland a lot faster.
