Tissue-typing is an essential test used in transplantation. Genetic markers found on the surface of white blood cells (WBC) called ‘human leukocyte antigens’ (HLAs) define a person’s tissue-type. Checking the HLA can determine whether a sample is compatible with another individual (a sibling or family member) for transplantation. Tissue-typing can help find the best match for tissue and blood cells to a recipient. Having your cord blood sample tissue-typed with provide a documented record of your child’s tissue-type, should the need arise for transplantation. We can perform this test for you at an additional cost if you wish.
