Present in the cord tissue are a type of stem cell called Mesenchymal Stem Cells which form bone, muscle, and cartilage. In clinical trials these types of stem cells are being studied as a possible treatment for spinal cord injuries, autoimmune disorders such as Type 1 diabetes and lupus, as well as stroke and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, cord tissue contains perivascular cells and vascular endothelial cells which may be of therapeutic use in the future.
